Q:What are the eligibility requirements to get Social Security disability benefits?
A:To qualify, you must have a medical condition that meets the SSA’s definition of disability. Also, you must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security for the minimum amount of years, generally 10.

Q:How do Social Security Disability (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments differ?
A:The funding for each of these programs comes from different sources. Because the SSDI is financed by employment taxes, these benefits go to those who have worked at jobs that have allowed them to contribute to the Social Security fund. Alternatively, the SSI program is funded by general taxes and is specially allocated to help those who have limited income and resources.

Q:How long does it take to get a decision after applying for disability benefits?
A:It generally takes between 30 and 90 days to receive a decision on an initial disability claim. The length of time is based on several factors, including the nature of your disability; how quickly your doctor sends in your medical information; if you are required to undergo a medical examination; and whether the SSA determines to review your application for quality purposes.

Q:Can I receive Social Security disability benefits for any months before I apply?
A:Social Security benefits are paid out to individuals for as many as 12 months before they apply. In order to receive benefits for these prior months, you must have proof that you had the disability while meeting other requirements.

Q:Can I return to work while getting Social Security disability benefits?
A:The SSA has special rules to help individuals get back to work while still maintaining their current Social Security benefits. There is an opportunity to go back to work for a nine-month trial period to determine if the person has the ability to work.
