If you are a Social Security Disability and/or Social Security Income (SSD/SSI) Recipient, you may qualify to have your student loan debt discharged!

On August 19, 2021, the Department of Education announced that over 323,000 SSD/SSI recipients now qualify to have their student loans discharged. These individuals fall into the “Medical Improvement Not Expected”(MINE) category under the SSA’s continuing disability reviews.

In the past student loan borrowers who fell into this category had to apply to have their loan discharged. Now, the SSA will share data with the Department of Education so that the discharges are automatic. It is important to note that these student loan discharges are not considered taxable income.

SSD/SS recipients that do not fall into the MINE category can still apply for discharge of their student loan at www.disabilitydischarge.com.
